Madalyn Morgan's Foxden Acres captures the setting of wartime England perfectly, an era I love. Her obviously painstaking and accurate research is blended throughout the novel without the mistake of `heavy handed' detail. The story is powerful. The characters are well rounded and fully believable. It is good to know there will be a sequel and we will learn more of these sisters. One to read and re-read.

 5.0 out of 5 stars Foxden Acres - a guaranteed favourite, 18 May 2013
This is a gripping - and well researched - story of Britain in the Second World War. Romance mingles with reality, comedy with tragedy, reflecting the many aspects of wartime Britain. A thoroughly good read.

I've always shied away from "period fiction", preferring more contemporary novels, but someone recommended this to me and I gave it a go - and was instantly in love with this book. The characters - especially Bess and James - are believable and lovable and I found myself enthralled by the storyline which manages to be cosy and shocking and realistic and fantastic all at the same time. Foxden Acres is beautifully written and I can't wait to read more by the author - I sincerely hope there will be more!

4.0 out of 5 stars  Me? Read wartime romance?, 11 April 2013

This genre is not usually my thing, but I enjoyed this story of people keeping calm and carrying on. In similar books I've read, the focus is almost on the situation: there is a lot of discussion of the privations of life on the Home Front, and how the characters cope. Here they get on with it - the problems are just part of life that have to be dealt with, not talked over endlessly. This leaves the relationships between people centre stage, as they should be and, I suspect, as they would have been for most people at the time.

So I'm a convert, at least to this author, and am looking forward to reading about the other sisters.

Oh, and one other thing: don't judge this book by the publisher. It is gripping enough to read in one go and has none of the errors, inconsistencies or nasty pagination that are often to be found in books published through lulu and similar houses. (I have a paper copy as well as the Kindle edition that Amazon will no doubt tell you I bought.)

I really enjoyed reading this book. I like stories from this era and this did not dissapoint. Lots going on, war time scenes, bombing, farming, romance, some good times, some sad times. Characters you really become involved with. Looking forward to reading the other books from the series about the other sisters. Hope we don't have to wait too long.

 5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars  Superb, 16 Feb 2013
This review is from: Foxden Acres (Kindle Edition)
A stunning debut novel. At times I chewed my nails. At other times I cried. But I also felt my heart lift. This book has it all - tension, love and loss all against a backdrop of a bygone era. A great drama in all. I look forward to reading about the other Dudley sisters who, I believe, each have their own story to tell.

Foxden Acres is a heartwarming page-turner that is beautifully evocative of the wartime era.  It has everything that a powerful romance needs - bravery, passion, turmoil and loss, and strongly drawn characters that you care about from the start.

Madalyn's writing style captures the feel of the era perfectly.   A lovely, lovely book!

This wonderful book draws the reader into an historical story of how lives can be changed in an instant, but that love, family and friendship endure above all else.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars A Tea and Crumpets Sort of Book, 23 Feb 2013

Reading is such a subjective activity. What you want to read can depend on the weather, the time of year, the time of day and especially the mood of the reader. Well, the next time you have one of those 'I just want to curl up in front of the fire with a cup of tea and a plate of crumpets' days, Foxden Acres, the story of Bess Dudley and her team of Land Girls, would be an ideal reading choice.

Madalyn Morgan's debut novel made me smile; it also made me cry. It even made me nostalgic for an era I am too young to remember. It is a gentle story, set against the background of WWII, where most of the characters are good, kind and happy most of the time, despite the horror of the times, but it has enough tension and twists to keep the reader interested right to the end. I really enjoyed Foxden Acres and am looking forward to reading about the rest of the Dudley sisters.

Very evocative of the period -slightly before my time but very much of my parents generation. This is, I understand, a newly published author and I look forward to the next one.

Foxden Acres had me hooked from the word go. I found it impossible not to form a strong emotional attachement to lead character Bess, who through her grit and determination gets through some of life's toughest challenges. I laughed, and I cried! Foxden Acres will be a firm favorite in my recommended reading lists from now on. If you've not read it, you must!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating tale of women's lives during WWII, 10 Mar 2013
This is a moving page-turner of a novel that portrays women's lives on the homefront during WWII while focusing on the coming of age of the main character, Bess. And accurate historic details create a believable picture of the lives of those in both the country and London during this time. There is also a glimpse of the London theatre world in this first book in the series, and I am looking forward to reading about the sister who goes on the stage.

I really enjoyed Foxden Acres, the story itself was great, but also the historical point of view gave another layer of interest.  The plot was a bit of a rollercoaster at times, and I laughed at times, cried a little, and would recommend this to all fans of historical drama or romance books.

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series later on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thwarted Romance, 30 May 2013

This is a good story about the life of a young girl whose dreams are changed on a couple of fronts. The heroine is likeable without being made to be something she isn't. She really reflects the ordinariness of life that can be changed by unexpected events. She isn't particularly a heroine but her story is one that we can all relate to, particularly change of career, romantic misunderstandings & love of family. A really good, solid story that I read in one or two sittings!!

I've read most of Lilian Harry's books set in the 40s, so bought this as it's also in the same era. I wasn't disappointed.

The characters are well written so that you feel really involved with them, and it gives you a sense of how life was back then. The story was engaging enough to make me want to keep reading and find out how Bess got on. It has a bit of everything, drama, emotion, some happy moments and sad.

A book worth buying.

I thoroughly enjoyed Foxden Acres. The author's detailed research added so much to the story and really evoked wartime England. The novel is a love story (and a very moving one) but also a great deal more. The characters are well developed and engaging. It is interesting and exciting to know that the heroine's sisters are to have their own stories told in future novels..a real treat in store for readers.
